JANEZ PRISTAVEC - WoMEN

8. 2. 2017 - 8. 3. 2017

To achieve something in life is valuable and attractive. Things only look enigmatic. When you approach the truth respectfully, slowly, a revelation follows and later intense recognition, which is a reward for your effort.  Janez Pristavec

After the Little Nude show the E2RD gallery thematically continues with a series of women by the late artist Janez Pristavec. The pieces chronologically follow the previously exhibited nudes from the 1970's. Original linocuts titled Girl with a Rooster, Girl on Horse and Girl in the Window were all made in the 1980's during a period when he mainly focused on depicting animals such as lizards, frogs and fish in the techniques of linocut, woodcut and drypoint. The exhibited pieces are original prints from that period;

The paintings on canvas come from a range of similar works created in the mid-eighties, with studies done on paper first, where he explores different compositions and colour combinations. In that time he paints nudes primarily on canvas and shifts away from using paper for his finished work, but still uses different techniques to achieve desired accents.

At the beginning of the 1980' he fully devotes himself to chromatic abstract exploration of the landscapes of Maribor, primarily that of the hill of Melje and the Pohorje Massif. His lively colour pallette used in the landscape studies is clearly reflected in the nudes of that period.

The colour drawings of women from the late 80's are a continuation of the work done in the late 70's. He usually depicts a woman, either sitting or lying down, always accompanied by a bouquet, a symbol of the ephemeral nature of life. His mise-en-scène and colour harmonies become more balanced with an attention to detail previously less highlighted, that give adynamic flow to his later paintings.
